As as author, would you feel bad if you saw your once $20 book in bulk at the Dollar Tree?
I was in the Dollar Tree and saw one of my old professor’s books (it was a bomb, but he since has written better things). On the one hand, if your book is in the dollar store it means A LOT were printed, and now it’s available to the masses. On the other hand, it means you bombed and your snobby literary friends are secretly laughing at you (this guy definitely plays the snobby literary game).
i dunno.. i would look at it as a way to reach more people than you would otherwise. as a kid who loved to read and my parents barely made it paycheck to paycheck (if they were lucky) i hit bargain bins all the time. i was introduced to some of the greatest poets, memoir writers, story writers this way.
in a really odd way it even taught me to root for the underdog because something i noticed at the annual giveaway (books at 50 cents each!!) was a lot of unknowns were among the mass amount of books there. these writers shaped me.. like Philp K. Jason, (yes i spelled his name correctly) i read him when he was a literal unknown and i grabbed his book from a bargain bin.. then again.. it doesn’t seem like anyone knows who he is.. hmmm… well i still have an appreciation for his poetry.
so i would look at it as a way to reach more people than you would have otherwise. it gets the book out there, ya know?

What is the most cost effective way to advertise a seasonal small business?
Unfortunately, I don’t have a lot of money to advertise because it will be coming out of my own pocket. This is a huge risk to advertise a business that might not do well. Ads in the local newspaper are fairly expensive for a short amount of time, as well as printing inserts and having the newspaper insert them. Bulk mail-outs are also not an option because of the cost.
What is my best bet for the largest distribution for a cost lower than $200? Help from small business owners and advertising majors/marketing majors is most welcome! Thanks!
I know who my customers are: old people. They will have old damaged photos.
I will be doing this business locally ONLY so the internet is probably not a good idea. And especially if my target market are people 40+. Neither of my grandma’s have a computer.
My suggestion would be to contact groups like the local senior center or service clubs like aarp, and others. They are always looking for people to come and speak and do activity’s and crafts. So you offer to teach a class on putting together a scrap book or preserving/archiving your slides or photographs for their posterity. They would eat that up! some of the seniors may be able to go home and put photos on a CD or scan and fix them in photoshop, but almost all of them would love to pay $100 to $200 to have all their photos on a CD, fixed permanently and available to give out to their kids and grand kids. if you had a room of say 30 people you could net up to $5000.00 Be creative, organized and professional you will succeed!
