Paper Cutter Trimmer
A paper cutting question: how do you cut small amounts with a paper cutter without it just bending the paper?
I have lots of paper cutting needs at work…. but always cut unevenly and need to trim the edges. But then the paper cutter won’t cut a small amount! It just bends the paper! I need a signmaker or some other professional to give me some tips, please!!!
It’s funny you should ask, Heather! I too work for a company which is too cheap to buy me a “real” rotary style paper cutter.

This baby or something similar will solve your slicing needs. Hopefully, unlike my own situation, your company is willing to spring the small cost of a good slicer.
Barring that, I have perfected a special technique for cutting those narrow slivers of paper off the edge, which I will now share with you.
First, you should check the blade and make sure it’s snug against the “board”. A loose blade puts you at a severe disadvantage.
If necessary, get out the tools and tighten up that blade.
Next, be sure to hold the paper firmly in place, on top of the board. If the paper slides around, this misguides the blade and contributes to the uneven tearing and paper-bending you’ve been experiencing.
Here’s the special magic trick: instead of swinging the blade down as you normally would, VIBRATE it while moving it downwards. In other words, while swinging downward, hold the handle with a “vibrating” motion. Simultaneously, press the blade towards the board, so that it slides down more snugly against it.
Don’t “shake” the handle. Just “vibrate” it. The difference between the two being that when you vibrate, the oscillations (length of the “side to side” motions) are small and extremely rapid. Obviously this is not easy to pull off, and requires some coordination. With practice it’s not as hard as it sounds.
You primarily only need to vibrate the blade during the initial phases of the slice. Once you’ve penetrated cleanly, chances are you can continue through the slicing motion without vibrating, and still make a clean cut. In some cases however, where the strip is extremely narrow, you may need to vibrate the entire length of the cut.

- This cutter has a blade that’s been fashioned out of Solingen steel. This is a very high-quality metal that will produce clean cuts every time you use the trimmer. The blade can even be removed so you can have it sharpened. This will help keep your trimmer in great shape.
- If you’re concerned about safety, you can rest easy because the Kutrimmer 1135 is extremely safe to use. It’s equipped with a Lexan safety guard that will keep your hands away from the blade. (Lexan is a high-quality plastic.) The safety guard even has a cutting line so you’ll know where exactly to trim your document.
- The Kutrimmer 1135 has a paper clamp that has what MBM calls an “Easy Lift” lever. This lever makes removing your paper from the device very easy. Plus, there’s an adjustable back gauge.
- This device’s extremely base is made out of metal and it has cutting guides printed on it. The unit even has side guides that have both metric and standard measurements. Plus, there are some rubber feet on the bottom of it to help the trimmer stay in place when you use it.
- The Kutrimmer 1135 is pretty large because it measures 23″ (depth) x 13.5″ (width) x 12.75″ (height). Due to this, it wouldn’t be a good choice if you don’t have a lot of free space in your work area.
- This trimmer is pretty pricey so it might not be a wise purchase if you have a limited budget. It usually retails for around $300.00. However, this cutter is really well-made, so it’s a very good investment.

Final grade: A-. The MBM Kutrimmer 1135 is one of the most durable guillotine paper cutters available so if you’re looking for a device that’s in it for the long haul, it would be a good choice. It’s also ideal if safety is a top concern and if you need something that can cut a large amount of paper in one go. Does anyone have any advice on which paper trimmer or cutter I should buy for rubber stamping projects?
My little sister is lookin’ for a paper trimmer or cutter for when she does her craft projects and I am trying to find one for her as a Christmas present. I did buy her a Fiskar’s Rotary Paper Trimmer but I have read a few reviews that they are hard to use. Does anyone have a trimmer that they would recommend? Thanks!
Fiskars has a paper trimmer that has grids on the base, a ruler to hold the paper in place and a small cutting blade that runs along a track. I use this all the time and am very pleased with it. It easily cuts 12×12 scrapbooking paper. I have never had a problem or been disappointed with any Fiskars product. They are very user friendly and the products are so conducive to creativity.
